Comic Book Subscriptions Explained: Discounts, Shipping and What You Save
Most people who read comics monthly are paying full cover price for the privilege of driving to a shop and hoping the issue is still there. A subscription fixes both halves of that problem — the copies get set aside for you, and they cost less. Here's exactly how comic book subscriptions work at Radioactive Comics, what the discount tiers are worth in real money, and how shipping and billing actually run.
What a comic book subscription actually is
A subscription — most shops call it a pull list, a folder, or a standing order — is an ongoing instruction to your shop: every time a new issue of this title comes out, put one aside for me. Your shop orders it as part of its monthly buy, sets your copy in a folder with your name on it, and ships or holds it.
The critical part is timing. Comics are printed to the numbers retailers order two to three months ahead of release, not to actual demand. When a title breaks out, the print run is already locked. Subscribers get a copy because it was earmarked before the issue was printed; everyone else is competing for whatever's left on the shelf. We went deeper on that in New Comic Book Day Explained.

The discount tiers, and what they're worth
The discount scales with how many titles you subscribe to. Every title in your folder gets the same rate, so adding a fourth series makes the first three cheaper too.

Cover prices vary — $4.99 is typical for a standard monthly, but $3.99 and $5.99 books both exist, and prestige-format one-shots run higher. The percentages apply either way.
What that looks like over a year
Say you subscribe to four monthly titles at $4.99. At cover that's $19.96 a month. At the 30% tier it's $13.97 — a saving of about $6 a month, or roughly $72 a year. That's fourteen free issues, near enough, for reading exactly what you were going to read anyway.
The jump from three titles to four is the one worth noticing. Going from 25% to 30% doesn't just discount the new book — it re-rates the whole folder. If you're sitting at three and there's a fourth series you've been meaning to try, the math is on your side.
How shipping works
You pick the cadence that suits how you read:
- Weekly — your books go out as they release. Best if you follow current events and don't want spoilers.
- Bi-weekly — books batch up for two weeks, then ship. A middle ground on shipping costs.
- Monthly — everything ships together, processed on the last Wednesday of every month. Fewest packages, lowest shipping spend, and it suits readers who prefer to sit down with a stack.
Orders over $50 ship free, which monthly subscribers with a decent-sized folder tend to clear without trying. Every comic ships with a free bag and board.
How billing works
You're invoiced for what actually gets pulled — no charge for issues that slip their release date, which in comics is often. One rule matters: subscribers need to pay within the month of being invoiced to keep the folder current. If an invoice goes unpaid past that window, future titles stop being pulled and the reserved copies go back into inventory.
That's not a penalty so much as inventory reality. Your copies are ordered specifically for you months in advance, so an unpaid folder means books sitting in a box with nobody's name on them.

Is a subscription worth it for you?
Yes, if you read three or more ongoing series, you buy single issues rather than waiting for collections, you've ever missed an issue and had to hunt it down, or you're following a title with real heat on it.

Common questions
How much does a comic book subscription cost?
There's no subscription fee. You pay only for the comics you receive, discounted 20% to 30% depending on how many titles are in your folder. One title is 20% off, two is 22%, three is 25%, and four or more is 30% off everything.
Can I cancel or change my subscription?
Yes, any time. Add or drop titles from your folder whenever you like. There's no minimum term and no cancellation fee — dropping below a tier just moves your discount rate accordingly.
What happens if a comic gets delayed?
Nothing on your end. Delays are constant in comics. You're invoiced when the issue actually gets pulled, so a book pushed to next month is simply billed next month.
Do I have to subscribe to four titles to make it worthwhile?
No — one title still comes in at 20% off cover, which beats buying it off the shelf anywhere. Four is just where the discount tops out at 30%.
Does a subscription include variant covers?
